Congratulations to Judita Scott!
PIRS is very pleased to announce Judita Scott as the Recipient of Mary Affleck Volunteer Award of 2011 at our recently held Annual General Meeting. Judita has been supporting our ESL Intermediate student at Marpole location for the past three years and several other programs before that. She has demonstrated significant role in assisting the student learning experience. She engage the students in conversation, help them in small group work and participates fully in all classroom activities. We also appreciate her effort in sharing her interests and passions (i.e. gardening expertise), and her broad knowledge of Healthcare in Canada (as a retired occupational therapist.) In addition to those attributes, she also shows a passion for teaching which is a real encouragement to our student in learning more about English language. She definitely is a valuable member of our Marpole team!
The Mary Affleck Volunteer Award
Each year, at our Annual General Meeting Pacific Immigrant Resources Society presents the Mary Affleck Volunteer Recognition Award to an extraordinary volunteer who symbolizes the spirit of Mary Affleck, for whom the award is named. This award was generously established in 1994 with a donation from the Affleck family.
Mary Affleck was a devoted PIRS volunteer and supporter of countless community projects. Mary began volunteering with PIRS in 1981 as a children’s program volunteer and no matter how else she choose to serve, her greatest love remained spending time with the children in our programs. She served on the Program Committee from 1986 to 1991, when she moved to the Personnel Committee. At the time of her death on February 17, 1994, Mary was Chairperson of our Board. Mary touched the lives of everyone she met Mary’s generosity touched many lives and is remembered by all who knew her as a kind, gentle and capable person.
Those of us who knew Mary will each remember her in our own special way, and to commemorate that, we are pleased to award the Volunteer Recognition Award in her name every year. The recipient must demonstrate the qualities and commitment that we admired in Mary, and in this way, Mary’s generous spirit will live on.
