At PIRS we believe that family involvement is an important part of raising and teaching children. A number of our ESL Classes provide opportunities for women (mothers and grandmothers) to become involved in the child care program as participants in Parent Child Activities. We believe these opportunities provide an essential component of successful adaptation to Canadian parenting standards by promoting the benefits of positive parent-child relationships.
In these programs, caregivers set aside one session a week for parents to enjoy different activities alongside their children. Parents learn that without adult guidance, children do not automatically learn complex ideas through play. Children gain only implicit knowledge through pursuing their own interests in play – in order to make that knowledge explicit, teachers and parents participate in and guide the play, giving language and structure to more complex concepts as they arise. Also, parents have the opportunity to understand the importance for their children to do art, science, sing songs and listen to stories.
