2022 was an important milestone in the development of Canada’s universal child care system. Since its very beginning in 1975, PIRS recognized the importance of child care for immigrant mothers. This is why our programs always provided high-quality care and early education for children while mothers were in class. As the federal government laid out Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care Plan and the $10aDay campaign rolled out, PIRS wanted to ensure that immigrant and refugee women’s voices were heard and their needs integrated in the system’s design. This is how Building A Child Care System That Works for Immigrant and Refugee Women project started, a 2.5 years strategic initiative to foster equity for immigrant and refugee child care professionals and educators in the child care system, funded by Women and Gender Equality Canada (WAGE).
