Founders of PIRS recognized early on, women in their classes who were natural leaders. They were the women people turned to for advice and information. They were women who were eager to find out more and do more. Our Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) program was created to help empower newcomer women to gain confidence and become active in their community.

Through facilitated group learning, LEAD gives new English-speakers a thoughtful next step out of isolation and into their community. Classes and guest speakers explore topics such as the Canadian Government, Health Care, and Volunteerism. Program content has evolved and continues to do so to adjust to economic and social conditions.

This program is designed for newcomer women who speak enough English (Canadian Language Benchmark 5) and are interested in self-development, curious about job-readiness, training, or higher education.

Women who take part in LEAD learn:

  • Self-awareness
  • Assertiveness
  • Goal setting and planning
  • Group process and teamwork
  • How to identify obstacles
  • To understand women’s issues
  • Financial skills
